Yesterday, i had the privilege to enjoy a performance by this quartet group from europe called the Bel Canto Quartet. Initially i thought it was gonnabe some kinda Canto-nese singing, and therefore wasn't that excited about it.
Renee was there already, so she sat thru the first 30mins being mind-blasted by the performance, while busy smsing me saying "boy, they are good". I drove lor all the way to town, parked my car at some narrow alley in jonkers and ran up the stairs of the Cheng Ho Museum. Oh i had my 'entourage' with me. Or more like bodyguards, nyeh nyeh (Debs, Elys, Elvi) They were more into this than i do.
Guess what. Halfway up the stair way i could hear a high soprano echoing from the corridors. Crazy man, it felt like i was in Italy. This 'angmoh' quartet consisting of 1 soprano, 1 mezzo (spell-guessed) soprano, 1 tenor and 1 baritone, blazing through the walls and blowing our minds with broadway pieces and french/italian shebang songs.
First, they sang solo for each song. Then toward the end they all sang together, and wow were they loud! Ive never heard anyone sing this loud before (except for rock concerts where the singers shout), without the use of a microphone! The pianist used a very solid baby-grand piano, and that was all that accompanied their voices. Never before such standards were heard by my very own ears, live. I was mesmerised thru out that 2hour performance.
Thanks pastor J for buying those tickets.
Let's have more musical talents visit malaysia and further bloom our theatre and music industry! Without racial discrimination and racial injustice of course. That's another story.
Good night!
